Psychology PhD: from a failed Chapter 4 to a passed defense in 11 weeks

The challenge
My committee returned Chapter 4 twice. The second time my chair wrote one line: your analysis does not answer RQ2. I had run an ANOVA when my design needed ANCOVA with the pretest as covariate, and I had no assumption testing anywhere in the chapter.
What we changed
- A biostatistician re-ran the analysis in SPSS with pretest as covariate and produced full assumption diagnostics.
- We rebuilt the chapter in the order committees expect: sample, screening with actual values, descriptives, then one section per research question.
- Every table was reformatted to APA 7 with effect sizes alongside every p value.
- I was walked through each output on two calls so I could defend the choices myself.
The outcome
Chapter 4 was approved on the next submission with two typographical comments. I defended nine weeks later and passed with minor revisions.
The part that saved me was not the statistics. It was being made to explain every table out loud before the defense.
